From bumps to bliss: Navigating your pregnancy with osteopathy’s gentle touch

Firstly, for those of you reading this whilst pregnant, a massive CONGRATULATIONS from all of us at Health in Motion (formerly DM Osteopathy)!

Pregnancy is an exciting, beautiful, and transformative experience but it can also bring about various discomforts and physical challenges for expectant mothers. Osteopathy has gained recognition as an effective means of providing relief and support during this crucial time in a woman’s life by not only helping ease any aches and pains, but also preparing your body for a smooth labour, delivery, and postpartum recovery

During pregnancy your body goes through several changes such as increased flexibility of your ligaments, general loosening and softening of structures especially the pelvis, postural and gravitational alterations, shallow breathing, and ankle swelling. You may also notice pain or discomfort in your lower back, pelvis, hips, knees, feet and ribs as your baby continues to grow and develop.

So how can osteopathy help you?

Pain relief: One of the most common complaints during pregnancy is lower back pain. Osteopathic treatments, which may include soft tissue manipulation, stretching, and gentle joint mobilization, can help alleviate pain and discomfort associated with changes in posture and the added weight of the baby.

Pelvic Health: Osteopaths can provide specialized care for the pelvis and sacroiliac joint, addressing issues like pelvic girdle pain (PGP) or symphysis pubis dysfunction (SPD). These conditions can significantly affect mobility and quality of life during pregnancy.

Optimizing Alignment: Pregnancy can cause the body to adapt to new postures and weight distribution, which can lead to musculoskeletal imbalances. Osteopathy aims to optimize the alignment of the spine, pelvis, and other structures to ensure optimal function and comfort.

Stress Reduction: Pregnancy can be an emotionally and physically stressful time. Osteopathic treatments not only address physical discomfort but also promote relaxation and reduce stress, benefiting both the mother and the growing baby.

Preparation for Labour: Some osteopathic techniques, such as craniosacral therapy, can prepare the body for labour by optimizing pelvic mobility and reducing tension in the pelvic floor muscles.

Is osteopathy a safe treatment option during pregnancy?

Yes, as the clinic’s specialist osteopath, I have a passion for treating and encouraging women through their pregnancy. I’ll combine my osteopathic skills and clinical Pilates knowledge together to support you through your pregnancy safely and holistically.

All techniques used and exercises given are carefully selected to minimise risk. These treatment plans are gentle and the comfort of you, the mother, is always taken into consideration

Please note – although osteopathic treatment is generally considered safe during pregnancy, if your pregnancy is considered high risk or you are still within your 1st trimester, we advise you to check with your GP, midwife, or obstetrician before seeking care from any form of manual therapy

What can I expect from my first treatment?

  1. At the start of your consultation, you will be given the opportunity to discus your symptoms, pregnancy journey, concerns, and any goals you might have
  2. A thorough examination assessing your body and movement will be carried out
  3. After a diagnosis and treatment plan has been discussed, you will receive some hands-on treatment. This will include some soft tissue massage, stretching, joint movement and some gentle manipulations
  4. You may be given some stretches and exercises to do at home to help facilitate and speed along your recovery

Please wear loose, comfortable clothes that are easy to move around in

If you find that any of the above resonates with you, don’t hesitate to get in touch and I will be happy to help!
